Carpetbag Care & Maintenance

Thank you for choosing an MCW Handmade carpetbag. Each piece is crafted with carefully selected materials designed to be both durable and beautiful. With a little care, your bag will continue to hold its structure, color, and texture year after year, becoming a timeless companion for everyday use and cherished moments alike.

Below, you’ll find our recommended guidelines to help you care for your carpetbag and keep it looking its best.

General Care

Our carpet fabrics are chosen for their strength, longevity, and ease of maintenance. These bags are made to be enjoyed—carried daily, traveled with, and woven into your life—not tucked away on a shelf.

To help your bag stay in great condition:

  • Avoid rough or dirty surfaces: While the fabric is durable, sharp or abrasive surfaces may cause wear over time.

  • Protect from prolonged sunlight: When not in use, keep the bag away from extended direct sunlight, which can gradually fade certain fabrics.

  • Store with shape in mind: When storing your bag, keep it upright or lightly stuffed with tissue paper or soft cloth to maintain its silhouette.

Protection Spray

To enhance the durability of your bag’s fabric, we recommend applying a fabric protection spray such as Scotchgard or a similar product.

Benefits include:

  • Increased resistance to dirt and stains

  • Easier cleaning and lighter long-term maintenance

  • A protective finish without altering the texture or feel of the carpet material

Always follow the spray manufacturer’s instructions, and test it in a small, discreet area first to ensure compatibility.

If Your Carpetbag Gets Wet

Life happens—rain included—and your carpetbag is designed to handle occasional moisture.

If your bag becomes wet:

  1. Gently blot excess moisture with a clean, absorbent towel.

  2. Use a hair dryer set to low or medium heat, aiming at the damp areas.

  3. Keep the dryer moving to prevent overheating any one spot.

This method helps the fibers return to their natural texture and prevents water from sinking deeper into the fabric.

Cleaning & Spot Care

For day-to-day cleaning and occasional marks:

  • Use a soft cloth or gentle brush to remove surface dust or debris.

  • For small stains, spot clean with mild soap and water, applying gently—avoid oversaturating the fabric.

  • Do not machine wash or submerge the bag in water, as this may distort its structure.

  • For bags with leather components, use a leather-safe cleaner or conditioner to keep those areas soft and supple.

Storage Tips

When your bag is not in regular use, good storage habits help preserve its shape and materials:

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from humidity.

  • Use a dust bag or pillowcase for protection against dust and occasional scuffs.

  • Avoid plastic containers or plastic bags, as fabrics need airflow to stay fresh.
