Fabric Snag and Fray Care Guide

Understanding & Caring for Your Carpet Bag

Our carpetbags are crafted from richly textured fabric made with thicker yarns and large woven motifs. This unique material gives each bag its signature vintage character — but it can also naturally produce occasional snags, pulled loops, or minor fraying, especially around larger flower or pattern areas.

This page will help you understand why this happens, how to care for it, and what to do if you prefer us to repair it for you.

Why Snags and Fraying Can Occur

Carpet fabric is woven in a way that creates raised patterns using thicker threads. Because of this:

  • Certain areas may catch slightly on jewelry, nails, or rough surfaces.

  • Larger motifs have more texture, and those areas may show a loose loop or small fray over time.

  • This is considered a normal characteristic of carpet-woven materials, not a defect.

Importantly, these surface-level threads are not structural — your bag’s durability is not affected.

Your Bag Is Still Strong & Secure

Underneath the patterned carpet fabric, every MCW Handmade Carpet Bag is reinforced with a strong, heavy-duty base cloth.
This inner foundation is what gives the bag its true strength.

So even if you see a snag or small loose thread, the integrity and durability of the bag remain completely intact.

How to Fix a Snag at Home (Quick & Easy)

If you see a loop or thread sticking out, you can safely and easily treat it at home:

  1. Gently burn the loose fiber using a lighter or small flame.

  2. A quick pass — no direct contact — will shrink the thread back into place.

  3. Once done, it will blend with the surrounding fabric and become barely noticeable.

This is the same technique we use in-house during finishing.
